Biography

Professor Sugandhika Suresh obtained my BSc Honours in Human Biology from the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 1998 and completed her PhD in Biochemistry in 2002. She worked as a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya before joining University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2006. Currently she is a Professor in Biochemistry (since 2014) at the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka (Head of Department from June 2015- June 2018). Research areas Traditional medicine and herbal extracts and effects on chronic diseases such as diabetes and arthritis with clinical trials Development of novel products from indigenous medicines Nutritional status of children and young adults Oral and colorectal cancer Substance abuse Laboratory animal science Stress, migraine and dysmenorrhoea Publications Authored more than 35 indexed and peer-reviewed papers and 100+ communications Supervised several PhDs, MPhils and MScs Awards Three Presidential awards for research Cited in International Marquis Who’s Who in the World 2015 Two National Science Council merit awards SUSRED – Supervisory award from National Science Foundation Faculty of Medical Sciences Alumni achievement award and Faculty Oration medal University of Sri Jayewardenepura research awards Best postgraduate research awards by Institute of Chemistry, Ceylon and SLAAS (Sri Lanka Association for Advancement of Science) Other contributions President of College of Biochemists of Sri Lanka Founder Secretary and Past President of Sri Lanka Association for Laboratory Animal Science Council Member of Federation of Asia and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists Warden of female hostels of University of Sri Jayewardenepura from 2013 Vice President of Organization for Women in Science (OWSD) Sri Lankan Chapter Poet and lyricist
